QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions About Dance and Paris Ballet and Dance

We answer these questions honestly—without “sugar coating.”

Why is taking a variety of dance styles so important?

Ballet is the foundation for most dance disciplines. However, proper training requires that a student learns to use their body in different ways. While there are strictly modern and contemporary dance companies, most ballet companies today include modern and contemporary works in their repertoire.

A strong dancer must be adaptable. It is also very clear that dancers in top internationally recognized contemporary companies have impeccable classical ballet training.

How does Paris Ballet and Dance select teachers?

There are hundreds of people who claim to be teachers. At Paris Ballet and Dance, we select instructors with proven, extensive classroom and performance experience.

While certifications and degrees are valuable, nothing replaces real-world experience as a professional dancer. Unfortunately, many teachers have degrees but lack the professional background—or the ability—to teach effectively.

Our faculty includes professionals trained at and/or associated with prestigious institutions such as the Paris Opera Ballet, the Paris Conservatory, the National Ballet School of Cuba, the Boston Conservatory, and companies like Miami City Ballet and Houston Ballet.

We carefully evaluate each instructor’s credentials, knowledge, and experience before hiring.

What makes your school different?

Like fast-food chains or retail pharmacies, dance schools seem to exist on every corner. Choosing one can be difficult, so we will simply speak for ourselves.

If you are looking for competitions and conventions, Paris Ballet and Dance may not be the right fit. We focus on strong, ballet-based technical training.

We train every student as if they aspire to become a professional dancer. This level of discipline benefits students in any career path they choose.

What makes your school director different?

Director Jean-Hugues Feray trained at the Paris Opera Ballet School and the Paris Conservatory—considered among the most prestigious ballet institutions in the world. He has performed internationally and brings over 15 years of teaching experience.

Before coming to the United States, he earned an EB-1 visa for individuals with extraordinary ability—an honor reserved for those recognized at the top of their field through sustained national or international acclaim.

Is it likely my child will become a professional dancer?

Becoming a professional dancer requires talent, desire, dedication, and significant sacrifice. Serious students often prioritize training over social activities.

Many children simply do not want—or are not able—to commit at that level, and that is perfectly fine. Dance still provides discipline, confidence, and life skills that benefit any path.

Will my child participate in competitions?

Paris Ballet and Dance is not a competition school. We train students for professional-level dance, not for competitions.

While competitions like Youth America Grand Prix or similar events are prestigious, only a small percentage of dancers participate. Not all students are suited for or benefit from competition environments.

We do, however, provide performance opportunities through professional-style productions.

Will you tell me if my child won’t become a professional dancer?

Dance training is similar to athletic training—many factors determine success. Most students eventually understand their own capabilities.

Sometimes, it is unrealistic expectations from parents—not the student—that create challenges. As students mature, many discover other interests, such as musical theatre, where dance training remains extremely valuable.

Why are you strict about punctuality?

Being late is disrespectful to both the teacher and fellow students. It disrupts class and causes students to miss critical warm-up time.

“At the start time” means ready to begin—not arriving at that time.

Repeated tardiness may result in students being asked not to participate in class or rehearsal.

Are there exercises students can do outside of class?

Yes—stretching is essential. Staying active is equally important. Excessive screen time should be limited.

Paris Ballet and Dance also offers summer programs to help students maintain and improve their training.

Is my child in the correct class?

Yes. Class placement is carefully evaluated and continuously reviewed. Adjustments are made when necessary to support each student’s development.

When can my child go on pointe?

Students begin pointe work when they are physically ready—typically between ages 10 and 12, though it varies. Never compare one child to another.

What should I expect from auditions and casting?

Performing is a privilege, not an entitlement. Casting is based on ability, discipline, attendance, and professionalism.

Auditions are fair and judged by experienced professionals. They also prepare students for real-world opportunities such as summer intensives and professional auditions.

Not every dancer is suited for every role—but all students have opportunities to perform.

Are private lessons important?

Private coaching can be extremely beneficial, especially for students pursuing professional goals. However, they do not replace the value of group classes.

Do you weigh students?

No, absolutely not.

Why is nutrition important for dancers?

Proper nutrition supports performance and prevents injury. A healthy diet and active lifestyle are essential.

Processed foods, excessive sugar, and inactivity can negatively impact a child’s health and development.

Can dance cause eating disorders?

No. Research shows eating disorders are complex medical conditions and not caused by dance training itself.

Do I need to stay during my child’s class?

No. This is an opportunity for parents to use their time productively. It also helps children develop independence.

Why discourage gossip?

Gossip spreads misinformation and creates a negative environment. If you have questions, always speak directly with the school staff.

Why no photos during performances?

Photography can distract performers, disrupt the audience, and create safety risks. Live performances are meant to be experienced in the moment.

Final Thoughts

At Paris Ballet and Dance, the goal is not just to train dancers—but to instill discipline, responsibility, and life skills that extend far beyond the studio.

If you want, I can also:

  • Make this shorter for a website FAQ page
  • Turn it into a brochure or parent handbook
  • Adjust the tone (more formal, more friendly, etc.)
